8.5 Earthquake gives Tokyo little Buzz

A magnitude-8.5 earthquake struck off the Ogasawara Islands south of Tokyo on Saturday evening, jolting wide parts of the Kanto region and causing moderate tremors in many parts of the archipelago, the Meteorological Agency said.

No tsunami warning was issued by the agency, and no serious injuries or major damage were immediately reported in the Ogasawara chain by local authorities.

In Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, a woman in her 70s sustained a minor injury when dishes fell on top of her head at home. In Minato Ward, Tokyo, a building elevator stopped suddenly, trapping people inside.
Quake took a toll on liquor section at supermarket in Saitama
The quake, which measured upper-5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, occurred at 8:24 p.m. at a depth of 590 km (370 miles) below the seabed west of the Ogasawara chain, the agency said. Given the depth of the epicenter, slow lateral vibrations continued for about a minute.

The Otemachi district in central Tokyo registered an intensity of 4 on the Japanese scale, and many areas in neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture were rocked more violently, according to data released by the agency. The town of Ninomiya, facing Sagami Bay, registered upper-5.

On Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara chain, communities experienced powerful jolts. NHK quoted Yoshiyuki Sasamoto, who runs a local inn, as saying things started to fall from shelves as the tremors continued.

Following the quake, the government quickly set up an emergency task force at the prime minister’s office to assess the situation.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said no damage had been reported at its Fukushima No. 1 and No. 2 nuclear power stations.

But a power outage briefly affected a combined 600 households in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, and the city of Fujimino, Saitama Prefecture, Tepco reported.

Central Japan Railway Co. and East Japan Railway Co. suspended operations on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line.

In Tokyo, the Yamanote Line and other rail routes were halted for safety checks. NHK footage showed many people stranded at major hub stations, including Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro.
Crowds of commuters formed around some of the busier stations as trains stopped
“The number of quakes seems to be rising these days, and I’m worried,” said a 34-year-old office worker stuck at Tokyo Station.

A college student who gave up waiting in a long line at a bus stop outside Shibuya Station said he had no choice but to spend the night at a friend’s apartment.

The Tokaido shinkansen and some other lines later resumed operation after safety was confirmed.

Haneda airport in Tokyo temporarily closed its runways for safety checks but resumed services within an hour.

DD 16.24 ... Mother's Day ...

Funny story ... ok, not that funny ... we used the same time schedule from Christmas for Mother's day
(10:30 am on Monday Japan Time, 6:30 pm on Sunday Utah Time)
... it turns out we forgot to adjust for Daylight Savings Time ... call starts at 6:30, NOT ...
... Around 6:45, Trenton was in BIG TROUBLE ...
... around 6:50, Elder Griffiths still had 40 minutes before he would even try to call ... Dad's Bad.

We got this idea for a family picture from the Paxman's ... Thanks.
New news from Japan ... aparently the missionaries in Tokyo have been asked NOT to flash the "peace sign" while being photographed ... I think Sam is just expressing appreciation for two parentals in her life today, not just for Mom on this Mother's day.

Three quakes shake Tohoku; Small tsunami hits coast.

A small tsunami (20 cm) struck the coast of Iwate Prefecture was triggered by a subsea quake with an estimated magnitude of 6.9. It struck on Tuesday 17 February 2015 @ 8:06 AM JST; about 210 km east of the city of Miyako and 10 km deep, the agency said.

Another earthquake measuring upper-5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 shook Aomori Prefecture and other parts of the north on Tuesday afternoon.

The quake struck at 1:46 p.m. The Japan Meteorological Agency described it as magnitude 5.7, with an epicenter around 50 km off the coast of Iwate Prefecture and 50 km deep.

One of the hardest-hit districts was the town of Hashikami, where upper-5 was recorded. It registered as 5-weak in the village of Fudai in Iwate Prefecture.

Sirens sounded as residents sought higher ground. The largest tsunami waves were measured between 8:35 a.m. and 9:07 a.m. at a port in the city of Kuji, and a 10-cm surge was recorded in Miyako. A smaller tsunami reached the city of Kamaishi, the agency said.

Evacuation orders were issued for residents in coastal districts of Kuji and the town of Otsuchi, and evacuation advisories for the cities of Ofunato and Rikuzentakata as well as Kamaishi.

The Iwate Prefectural Government reported no damage from the waves.

The quake hit at 8:06 a.m. It measured 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Iwate and three other prefectures in Tohoku — Aomori, Akita and Miyagi.

The quake was believed to be an aftershock of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the Tohoku region on March 11, 2011, the meteorological agency said.

All 48 of Japan’s workable nuclear reactors remain offline after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered the Fukushima No. 1 plant meltdown disaster.

East Japan Railway Co. briefly halted Tohoku Shinkansen bullet trains between Furukawa Station in Miyagi and Shin-Aomori Station in Aomori amid a power failure.

The evacuation instructions and advisories were lifted at 10:20 a.m.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. The nation accounts for about 20 percent of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

6.8 Earthquake Hits Central Japan

(Reuters) - An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 6.8 jolted central Japan on Saturday evening, temporarily trapping 21 people when their homes collapsed and leaving 13 people injured, police and public broadcaster NHK said.

A National Police Agency official said the quake destroyed five houses in Hakuba village, host to ski jumping and other events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games, but that the 21 villagers trapped were successfully rescued.

At least two of them were injured, although the degree of their injuries was not immediately clear, he said.

NHK reported 13 people were injured in the quake, including five who were seriously hurt.
Firefighters and Rescuers examine collapsed buildings
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters an advanced party of Japan's military had been sent to the area, and others were on standby.

High-speed trains were halted but later resumed service, Kyodo news agency reported.

There were no signs of irregularities at Tokyo Electric Power Co's (TEPCO) Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear plant, a spokesman for the utility said. The plant, where all seven reactors are currently off-line, is the world's largest power station.
Residents look at damaged buildings
NHK quoted an official in the village of Ogawa near the epicenter as saying there was a long tremor and documents fell off shelves.

"On the second floor of our house, the tremor was too strong to stand," said Sakiko Hagiwara, an NHK employee in the area.

"Pictures fell off the wall," she said, adding there were no cracks in the walls.
A local community center stands damaged following the earthquake
NHK also said there was a report of a landslide blocking roads near Hakuba.

Japan, situated on the "Ring of Fire" arc of volcanoes and oceanic trenches that partly encircles the Pacific Basin, accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Typhoon Phanfone passes through Tokyo early Monday morning

Typhoon Phanfone, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Neneng, was a large and powerful tropical cyclone which affected Japan in early October 2014. It was the eighteenth storm and the eighth typhoon of the annual typhoon season.

Phanfone started affecting Japan late on October 4, as it began weakening. High waves and winds of 90 miles per hour (140 km/h) were reported most in southern Japan. At the Kadena Air Base, the typhoon killed an U.S. airman and left two others missing after they were swept out to sea. It was also reported that 10 people were injured and nearly 10,000 houses are without power.

As of Oct 6, a total of seven people were killed while four remained missing in Japan by the typhoon.

Volcano Eruption envelops over 200 hikers with ash and rocks

On Saturday, Japan’s Mount Ontake volcano erupted, releasing an enormous cloud that thundered down the mountain, enveloping over 200 hikers in thick ash and rocks. According to the Nagano Prefecture Police, 36 people are presumed dead, with twelve having been recovered and identified, and 24 still on the mountain.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has declared the Volcanic Alert Level for the mountain to 3, meaning that people are instructed not to approach the volcano under any circumstances, as another eruption could take place within the next week. Mount Ontake is Japan’s second tallest mountain (after Mount Fuji) at 10,060 feet.

CNN reports:
Authorities estimated there were 200 to 250 hikers in the area at the time of the eruption. Most of them were reported to have managed to make the long trek down the mountain.

DD 9.15 ... I swear it's not infected ... others disagree ... but I'm a Lifeguard ...

How was Typhoon Neoguri that hovered over/or hit Tokyo? Did you get any interesting weather from it? Dad said it brought a heat wave, like a 100 degrees some places, how hot did it get where you are?
It rained for a couple days, pretty hard, but not too bad, then it was crazy hot!!!
Path of Typhoon Neoguri
Photo of Typhoon Neoguri's 'Eye'
Did you feel the earthquake that occurred?
Yep, way early in the morning and woke us all up ... pretty fun.

How sick were you? Bad cold? Fever? Cough?
I may have just had a cold ... for a couple days.

Do they have cake mixes in Japan? Why did you put tofu in yours?  Are Japanese ovens different from ours? It looked great!
They don't have mixes ... yes, tofu was mixed in ... and yeah, they have microwaves with oven settings.

Yoshino Choro, how many transfers old is he?
Transfer four.

What areas has Yoshino Choro been in?
Urayasu

What city in Japn is Yoshino Choro from?
He is from Fussa Musashino Stake ... it's in the south mission.

Did you make the entire packet of blue raspberry lemonade in a pitcher or did you just make some of it?
Yeah, one normal one ... and then instead of using water, I used sprite for one!!! Sooooo good!!!!

Do you still have a baptism date for the end of August?
For the end of July ... might be the beginning of August ...

While Sam was in Rome she went to church with the Mission President and she ended up on the Italy Rome Mission Blog. Do you have permission to go to other mission blogs? If not, don't worry, Sam has tons of pictures, she will send you more than you can handle!
Can't do it ... so sad.

Are you running out of anything that we can send you? Anything you would just like us to send?
Deodorant ... would be nice.

Father ... Pictures of the typhoon ... saw one for a little bit. Then when I downloaded the whole message, it didn't let me see any of them.  Thanks for the letters!! And the Young Women's lesson was quite nice ... I think that I might use it!! It sounds like the lawn is going great!! I'm psyched to see it when I get back ... or whenever y'all send me a picture of it!!

Mother of mine ... I'm glad to hear that you are glad that Sam is back home ... Sorry for the bed bug scare ... it sounds like it got crazy up there ... I'm not sure that I'll need the four hundred dollars to purchase my iPad, but I'll let you know by the end of my mission .... the policy may change by then.

Smasher pants ... it sounds like your trip to Italy was crazy fun!! Sorry that you got bitten and got bigger from gelato ... sounds like a huge problem ... tell me you went running when you got home ... I know that when I'm all jet lagged and what not, I plan on running to help me stay wake ... I'm glad that you liked my birthday letter ... it sounds like you really liked it.

Stormerbormer sorry that you are soon starting the job that you've been preparing for, for the last couple years. I wish you luck, but, duh ... you when to school for this exact reason. Have fun though!! Enjoy the kiddies!!

So this week was interesting. Transfers were on Thursday! And since then Yoshino Choro and I have been running around doing all sorts of exciting stuff!! It's way fun!! We've taught a couple lessons, and contacted some less actives that the ward is looking to bring back. It looks like they might ... pretty much it was way sweet! My companion is like the most loving person I know.

I swear it's not infected ...
In other news. I bashed my foot into a wall this week ... I slipped in the water that comes out of the air conditioner and smashed my foot into the wall of our balcony ... it's pretty messed up ... I'll send a picture. The lady at the drug store told me to put some stuff and some gauze on it ... and that the worst thing for me to do was to shower it ... I slightly disagree ... so I've been showering it and washing it ... I've been using the stuff. It seems to be getting better ... slowly.

This week I learned that God has a sense of humor. Sometimes just when we think that we're on top of things, God decides something else, and it all changes. This week was full of stuff like that. God knows what is best for us, but sometimes we don't ... it always interesting to find out when a plan doesn't go as well as you hoped it would, and then you get to see why, when God shows you something, and you're like "oooooh, I totally understand now" it's just a nice feeling. Like this week. I was all like, why did all of our lessons fall through and what not, but now I know that we weren't prepared for them at the time. And now that we are, it is amazing to be able to teach them the way that God wants them to be taught.

So that's all for this week, I'm send some pics too!!!
Love you all, and see ya next week!!!
Griffiths Choro

What is this thing as big as my face?  I dunno but it sure does taste good!!! Naan Bread

Who is Elder White's companion? Is he cool?
Kuroiwa Choro ... a fourth transfer Nihongo ... He's way legit, love him to death.

Sautéd Diakon
Diakon
What is diakon?
It is a large radish ... that's way cheap, and delicious!!! It's like a 100¥ for a huge foot and a half long thing of awesomeness ...

How were splits with the DL on Wednesday?
They were good ... a learning experience ...

Are you riding the train at all? Or just biking?
Biking ... mostly. Some places are just too far.

Is it monsoon season there? Super rainy? How is the weather?
We are just getting in to it ... the time is coming.

Do you need more contacts yet? about how many do you have left?
A lot ... too many to even count.

Does your neck ever bother you anymore? or did the new Nihon Bag totally fix it?
Totally fixed it.

Did you get the birthday wishes from Sam? Or the package? or Grandma's card?
Got them all, along with a card form my trainer (Watanabe Choro) and the Budges (Mission President) ... not gonna lie, my trainers card was awesome ...

Did you feel the earthquake this morning?
6.0 magnitude earthquake near Tokyo, Japan on 5 May 2014 @ 5:18 AM:
Epicenter: 34.862°N 139.312°E depth=155.1km (96.4mi)
98km (61mi) SSW of Tokyo, Japan
Yep, sure did, @ 5:19 in the morning... delightful!!!

Any word on the Mother's Day call?? Thanks for the info.
How about Monday my time at ten? So Sunday at seven for you?
(Note from the Kaichou:  Please make your phone calls between the 11th and 13th at a time that is convenient for you and your family.  Please remember that you may use Skype to call your parents or you may have your parents call your telephone.  Please keep your [phone calls] short (preferably no longer than 30 or 40 minutes) as stated in the white handbook.)

Do you have SKYPE available on your Ipad?
Yes.

Is FaceTime an option for your phone call??
Sadly no ...

Do you still meet with your district on a weekly basis, can you give us a quick report on the district. How is everyone doing?
They are good, we all need more people to teach, but everyone is good.

How was your interview with the mission president?
It was good, it made me look at the gospel in ways I never had before.

This week was pretty good. Got the package and all the letters, it really made my day. The unexpected transfer resulted in a rough couple of days, but all the love from the fam made it worth it.

Parentals: ... you’re so inspiring. I just wanted to say thank you for all the love that you've shown us during our lives ... you really are great parents. If I'm half as good a parent as you two, then maybe there will be hope for my  kids. You’re awesome!!!

TeJay and Crystal and fam and unnamed awesome child number two: I like Spencer myself, but I’m sure that whatever you decide will be an amazing strong child full of self-confidence and joy,  pouring out humility and love to those around him, just like the rest of his family.

JanDee and Jaden and children of my heart: thank you for the birthday wishes!! It meant a lot!! It is moving to know that you are all watching out for me!! I loved the cards from the boys ... I feel as though I have gotten quite a bit fatter though ... I'll just come home and go work out with my wrestling nephew to get back in shape I guess ... Love you guys!!

Sam ... You creeper. loved the pictures ... good to know Abi is using my old phone ... and still not gotten one. Love it. I'm interested in these two other people who rock climb ... you should hook me up.

Stormer ... Storm trooper. Remember that time when you said that you would eat your own ...? And now here you are. With the future of the nation in your hands ... shaping lives beyond measure, inspiring others to greatness, raising those who have fallen into despair. Yet still ... we have a picture of you ... graduating like a bear ... love it. You’re a boss, congrats on school being over!! Congrats on all the job offers!! I'm a little confused at what is going down with your living sitch ... are you working in SLC and living in Cache Valley? That’s a long commute dawg.
So this week was good. I ate a lot of sugar, got some shirts and a tie and some candy from the other Choros in my apartment  ... , it's all good, to be honest I really just wanted to dendo all day and not think about it.

Looking back it's been an interesting year. I've pretty much been a missionary for all of it, but I feel as though I have learned so much. I dislike being twenty ... mainly because I can't say that I a dumb nineteen year old anymore, but I think that I’ll get over it. It's been a fun and crazy year, nothing has ever been harder, but I wouldn't give it up for anything in the whole world. There are days when I feel like giving up, when I feel like I should just go to the apartment, crash on the floor, and eat until I die, but then I remember what Christ did for all of us, and how uneasy it was for him. So I forget going back, forget how tired I am, and knock on that one more door ... and frankly, it's usually not that door, but like a hundred more later that we find someone who actually needs the gospel in their lives. It's really a joyous time, but it's really, really frustrating sometimes. But, growing is always hard right? If it were easy, we would not grow so much. Sad but true.

Well, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will send some now.  I love you and you’re all so amazing, I’m looking forward to Monday’ish, don’t quite know when yet.

Love Griffiths Choro ... who is now twenty.

A Rare Heavy Snowfall Hits Tokyo

AFP-JIJI, KYODO; The Japan Times; 8 Feb 2014
Heavy snow and severe weather struck Tokyo and other areas across Japan on Saturday, leaving three dead and more than 500 injured, reports said.

More than 740 flights were grounded as the weather agency issued a severe storm warning for the capital, while more than 40,000 households lost power.
A child holds a ball of snow near a half buried motorcycle near Tokyo.
At least 27 cm accumulated, the highest snowfall in the capital since 1969.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the first heavy snowfall warning for central Tokyo in 13 years. Snow accumulation reached 27 cm, the heaviest snow in the Japanese capital since January 1969, the agency said.

"Tokyo only averages 4.3 inches of snow each year. The last time they picked up an eight-inch-plus snowstorm was Feb. 12, 1994," said weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen.

Public broadcaster NHK said at least 494 people were injured in snow-related accidents only in eastern Japan, including 17 serious injuries.

It also said two female passengers, aged 88 and 90, died on Saturday in a car accident on their way to a nursing home in Ishikawa, central Japan. Police suspect one of the cars skidded on the icy road and caused the head-on collision.

A man was also killed in Nagano as a train smashed into his car at a railroad crossing, the broadcaster said, adding that 3,200 other accidents occurred across the nation caused by vehicles skidding in the icy conditions.

The agency issued a heavy snow warning for Tokyo, the first such warning for the capital in 13 years, calling on residents not to go out unless necessary. The agency also warned of strong winds and high waves in eastern Japan.

Japanese airline companies have cancelled at least 740 flights on Saturday due to heavy snow, NHK said.

Television footage showed hundreds of passengers queuing for reimbursement or a change of flights at Tokyo’s Haneda airport with departure boards indicating the cancellation of many flights.

Employees were hurriedly removing snow from the pavement in front of their shops and restaurants in Tokyo’s bustling Ginza district.

Some 43,800 households lost power in large areas of central and eastern Japan because of the heavy snow, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

In Tokyo, several universities delayed the starting times of their entrance examinations for the new academic year starting in April.

Tokyo Skytree, the world’s tallest broadcasting tower at 634 meters, was closed from 11 a.m. due to strong winds, its operator said.

Good news ... we've got mail ... Thursday evening 8:19 PM (JT) ...

Sorry, this week we have had literally zero time to take a P-Day ... we haven't even bought food for the week, but I just wanted to say, "Hey," really fast while I had some time. This week we had a lot of lessons and did some baptismal interviews for the other areas ... we also blitzed two areas this week and hopefully found some people that could be baptized before Christmas this year.

The sisters in my area are having a baptismal service on Sunday and didn't have anyone yet to baptize her so they asked me to do it. Should be fun, but I'm a little nervous ... not sure why really. But yeah should be a great week.

So we just got back from taking an investigator we have been trying to meet with some melon pan ..  and while he hasn't been that happy with us, today he freaked out tonight, in a good way. He was so happy that we brought him some melon pan ... apparently its like his favorite food ever and so he was really happy ... yeah, go me, my suggestion rocked it way good.

Thats about all I have time to say right now, but i just wanted to say that you are all so great, I got the kids' letters a couple days ago and it really made my day, they are so great! I got dad's letter too!!

Thank you so much for all that you do for me and those around you!!!

DD 3.35 ... Costco; a small taste of America in Tokyo ...

So I only have ten minutes. Not much happened this week. No time to read any of the wonderful emails really. We went to Costco today and that was way great. We ate hotdogs and bought peanut butter ... that was all we did for like three hours of travel to get there ... not great, but we got to see the ocean kinda so that was nice.

We are singing, “Nearer My God to Thee,” also I am now singing in the Matsudo Christmas concert, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” I never wish I had brought church music with me ... until now … the music here it’s not like what we are accustomed to in Utah.

This week we played basketball and stuff with some of the ward ... we also met with Brother S; he’s doing well. He’s going to be baptized soon. I have a picture that I would like to send, next week probably. I hope that all y’all are doing good!!!

We also made root beer floats, they were way good even though it was freezing outside.

This week I’m glad to hear that Clyde is a champion car!!!! Wahoo!! Yeah, that’s my boy. So literally I’m writing this at ten at night trying to let my comps have some time too … so sorry for the shortness of the eMail; but I hope that this week is good and that dad is, all good, helping mom with the cleaning for Thanksgiving.

Happy Birthday to Jayli!!!
Love to you all; it is always good to hear from you!!!
Love Griffiths Choro; pictures next week.

PS Dad, today at Costco I mixed orange juice and Mountain Dew … and thought of you ... it was quite delicious!

PSS Mom, we are singing tomorrow, Tuesday, and I don’t know when the Matsudo event is. I will let you know. Next week we hope to have more time to mail. Tonight we got back late form teaching a lesson. I want to send pictures next week too!!

I Love you mom! I’m glad that I can swim too!
We sent the following portions of an article from the Deseret News to Trenton ... thus the comment about swimming ... mom indicated that she was glad he knew how to swim.

MANILA, Philippines — The water was rising fast. In the darkness of early morning, Amanda Smith moved away from the window to shield her face from the slashing rain. She had shut it just moments before to ward off the raging storm whipping through the palm trees outside.

But now the wind had ripped it open, and the wooden shutters were slamming violently against the wall again and again. Sister Smith, an LDS missionary from Elk Ridge, Utah, couldn’t see anything outside, but she could smell the sea, which seemed to be getting closer and closer. They had to get out of here.

She had heard about the storm three days before, from a driver of a pedicab. It was typhoon season, and tropical storms were common in the Philippines. Still, the last storm warning had produced nothing but blue skies. Some of the missionaries wondered if this time would be any different.

There were nine missionaries with her in the house, a two-story structure made of cement blocks. They were young women from Utah and Alaska and the Philippines, all about her own age, 19. They had done what they could to prepare, hastily assembling 72-hour kits, and had even bought candles and rope, just like their mission president had asked, even though no one in the house thought either would be necessary.

Now, as water roared down the streets toward them, Sister Smith realized no preparations were too small. The worst storm in generations had just hit landfall.

She had been excited to go to the Philippines. But in some ways, she seemed too delicate for this place, with her long, willowy build and fine porcelain skin. The Philippines wasn’t exactly clean, and some things had taken getting used to — rice for every meal, the choking smell of exhaust on the clogged streets, cold showers from a bucket. But she had also fallen in love with the place — the sweet smell of mangos, the effervescence of the people, the way the language of Waray-Waray had started to roll off the tongue.

One day she sat down on a stool to teach a lesson in a dirt-floor shack and out of nowhere three fuzzy chicks materialized and walked around her legs, the way birds landed on Cinderella’s shoulder, and she thought: What is this magical place?

She had been out five months, she was assigned to an area called San Jose, where some of Tacloban’s richest and poorest residents live, some in nice apartments, others in shacks of bamboo and cardboard.

San Jose sits right on the sea, and so a few days before the storm, just to be safe, the mission president’s assistants asked her and her companion to come farther inland, which is where she was now, with nine other sister missionaries, in a house quickly filling with a black, mucky water.

At first, the sisters had all gathered in one central room on the second floor, thinking it the safest place in the house. But the water was now rising to their knees. Metal bars covered every window, preventing an escape outside. With no other choice they would have to go to the first floor, where the water nearly reached the ceiling, and try to open the front door to get out.

They knew the current could pull them out into the ocean, but if they stayed where they were now, they would drown in what had essentially become a box of cement walls.

One by one the sisters slipped into the freezing water on the first floor. A few couldn’t swim; they held tight to their companions.  Sister Smith was scared too, but she was determined not to let it show. She wanted to stay calm for the others.

The front door was locked with a metal latch on the bottom and the top. One of the sisters dived under the water and unlocked the bottom latch; another reached the top and did the same. But when they tried to open the door it wouldn’t budge. The water pressing from the outside and inside had sealed it shut.

What had been ebbing as a low level panic reached hysteria for some of the sisters. Sister Smith could feel the panic rising in her chest too. With a few of the other sisters she started to sing hymns, their voices muted by the stinky water rising to their chins. Sister Smith put on a brave face, not daring to say aloud what she was thinking: “I never thought this is where my life would end.”

The sister missionaries worked together. Sister Schaap punched a hole through an opening in a flimsy wall, and the group of 10 swam through the murky water that would soon carry their journals and clothes out to sea. Those who couldn’t swim clung tightly to their companions.

The sisters used the rope to reach a nearby roof. Sister Smith stood on the rain gutter, the other nine sister missionaries shivering beside her, the rain still coming down in sheets. Hours had passed since the beginning of the storm, and yet the sky above Tacloban was still gray, shrouded by fog.

One of the sisters suggested they pray. They huddled closely together, bowed their heads, and with the rain dripping down their chins, asked God to make the water stop. And then, in what Sister Smith could only describe as the greatest miracle of her life, the sea stopped rising.
